the plot

December 1, 2008

I define a plot is the story what an author wants to tell reader. By the way, English is my second language. So to catch English story is sometimes hard to me. I do not have many problems to understand definition of principle, but I cannot catch English literature story well. For example, I read Hamlet, Life in the Iron Mill, and est. I read Hamlet with my language when I was young, so I already knew what story is. However, when I read other books, which are unfamiliar to me, it is confused to me, so I read it over and over. Even though I read many times, sometimes I still do not understand. In the literature, there exists a narrative who explains about the story. Most time, she/he is helps reader to understand about the story and explains about what situation is in the book. To catch the plot, readers try to find the storys outline, which is situation, characters, surrounding, weather, and est; for instance, even the surrounding is one of important thing the reader should concern because it has a key to understand the plot. Most times, readers should concern what the character say each other because readers can get the plot. I think readers can practice how to catch the plot fast and easily. I think this is the best way the reader can catch the plot well. Moreover, reader should concentrate what they talk, and surround, where they are in, and ect.

Travles In West Africa

November 24, 2008

I enjoy reading Travels in West Africa. I surprise that Marry H. Kingsley explored in West Africa early 19 Century. Now, there are not many problems to travel woman herself in Africa; because we have enough information about Africa and technology has been advanced. Since we have enough information to travel, we can prepare what we need during the travel. However, in 19 Century, she chooses West Africa to travel and explores herself. I think she is very brave person. She wrote this book based on her feeling during the travel. When I read this I feel I read her diary while she was in the travel. She develops this book by place where she moves and also tells how she feels where she is. I like the part where she explains about foods. In the West Africa, there are foods she was used to have such as, alligator-pears, limes, and oranges, but there are different. She must be very disappointed about this; as she said, I should like to have explained. They usually green and sweetish in taste,…these are very pith and in full possession of the flavor of verjuice. When I read this part, I feel that she had very hard time and missed foods that she was used to have. During I read this, I identify me as her because when she enjoyed whether, I also enjoy that weather and when she miss the food, I also miss that food she explained. I thought literature is bored books, but I enjoyed reading Travels in West Africa.

King Solomon’s Mines

November 11, 2008

“King Solomon’s Mine” is interested to read. It is setting in Durban where is unknown area of Africa, and about adventure to find the King Solomon’s treasure. I knew King Solomon’s Mines through movie first. The main character Sir Henry’s lost brother, who had disappeared into the jungle to discover King Solomon’s treasure. Sir Henry and his company, who is Captain John Good, go to Durban to find both that is Henry’s brother and the legendary diamond, which is King Solomon’s treasure. While they are in adventure, readers can see their personality; Sir Henry is gentleman, brave, and wealth, and Good is arrogant and pretend like gentleman. During their adventure in Africa, they have difficult time; for example, they cross a great and almost die of thirst, and they travel through the African bush. Finally, they find the legendary diamond mines of King Solomon with an ancient map, which from Henry’s ancestor. What I remember with movie, people found the treasure, but a place, where they found the treasure, is collapsed. The author, Sir H. Rider Haggard, closes the story with letter, and this letter is from Henry Curtis to Allan Quatermain. This is different to me because I have not seen novels closed with letters. Moreover, I think that beginning of this novel introduce differently from other novel. When I knew this story’s already by movie but did not remember well, and it is little easier to read to me and is interested.

From Orientalism

October 28, 2008

Asia is different with America. They have a different culture, language, geography, and people. However, Asia has affected by America. Edward W. Said, who is author, defines and make an analysis about the orient. I am from South Korea where is in between China and Japan, but I did not know many things that the author tells us. The orientalism is a concept which is related to the literatures and arts of Europe, France, and America, and they are in the superior position than Asia. As supporting this, “From the beginning of the nineteenth century until the end of World War II France and Britain dominated the orient and Orientalism” (1993). Therefore, we can tell the French and the British have had a long tradition of orientalism as the author said (P.1991). I think that it depends on who governs whom; a country, which is governed by other country, stays an inferior position, and another country, which governs, the other country stays a superior position. In addition, the orientalism is in the Americans’ experiences, which are orient. I define the orientalism is the Western style in order to govern, reconstruct, and coerce the Orient.

I look for the dictionary to find to orientalism meaning; and it represents the Eastern people, but sometimes, it is used contemptuous.

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead

October 21, 2008

Actually, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are minor actors of Hamlet. They consist the play and develop the play. The play opens with the title characters, and they seem to be in the empty stage. Guildenstern bets on the toss of a coin, and he is perturbed that the coin has come down heads eighty-five times in a row; and it seems important to him. Moreover, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern lost their memory by something; therefore, they even confuse their own name, and in the act three, they still confuse and do not know well their name. Moreover, Guildenstern does remember who is Hamlet and asks to Rosencrantz in Act three. I think that they lost the coin which Guildenstern play with, so they stop play with it. I think the toss of a coin give us meaning to me; that is, there is always another result like the coin. The coin may show head and may show back. For instance, some of the conflicting views include art verses pornography, free will verses predestination, and observation verses participation.

In addition, Guildenstern have negative feeling about dead as he says, “No, no, no… Death is… not. Death isn’t. You take my meaning. Death is the ultimate negative. Not-being. You can’t not be on a boat.” However, Rosencrantz is different with Guildenstern as he says, “I wish I was dead” in the act three; and it seems both sides which are opposite meanings like coin. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern’s communication is confusing to me; one is asking, and another is asking again what same questions are, and they are playing game which I do not understand; I think this is one of method to find their situation . Since they lost their memories, their talking is more confusing to me.

Hamlet

October 15, 2008

In Hamlet a king of Denmark has died suddenly, and his queen has married his brother, who has succeeded to the throne.  From college in Germany Prince Hamlet has returned, suspicious of his mother and uncle and indignant that his father seems so soon forgotten. The ghost of his father appears to Hamlet, branding the new king as his murdered and commanding Hamlet to avenge the deed. Hamlet delays, apparently to get proof. At length, by producing at court a play in which a king is murdered by his brother he secures the necessary proof. But Hamlet still delays, feigning insanity. By chance he kills a fussy old counselor, is banished, rouses himself from his indecision, and plots the death of the companions whom the king has bribed to murder him. On Hamlet’s return to Denmark, the king and the counselor’s son plan his death in a duel by means of a poisoned drink and a poisoned sword.  As a result of this plot the queen, the king, the counselor’s son, and Hamlet himself die.  The real drama does not lie in Hamlet’s struggle with the murderer of his father, but in his own perplexities; he is overcome with a sense that life is not simple but complex; that action, though necessary, is beset with numberless difficulties which the mind must pause to consider. Moreover, it is Hamlet’s character that seals his fate; a man of decision like his uncle, placed in Hamlet’s circumstances, would have carried through his duty of revenge to a triumphant conclusion. Hamlet is melancholy, bitter, and cynical, full of hated for his uncle’s scheming and disgust for his mother’s sexuality. Moreover, he is indecisive and hesitant, but at other times prone to rash and impulsive acts. Claudius is a calculating, ambitious politician, driven by his sexual appetites and his lust for power, but he occasionally show signs of guilt and human feeling. The story is much truer to the essential conditions of human life, where a man’s personality, his gifts and defects, pretty nearly determine the kind of life he will lead.

Hamlet’s Psychoanalysis

October 6, 2008

Jacques Lacans theory is base on the Freuds theory and covers weak of Freuds theory. By Lacans theory, many people are displeased their current situations and they want to solve that disputes they do not satisfy. He is in being tied relationships, and it makes him complicated. He can not be competent and a possibility of taking that pain. He also has pressure with this confused state of his mind because he is a prince. . In this confused state, Hamlet suddenly lost his father, and it might make him more difficulty. These situations may affect Hamlets state of mind and his mental condition. Hamlet thinks he meets his dead father; actually, his father is dead, but how he thinks that he meets his father in reality. This is not understandable for readers that think only realistic. He may have a dream and talk his father. By a big bad happening, he may confuse between his dreams and realism. Therefore, he thinks his uncle who marries his mother is a murder. By Freud, it is possible action for people. He is in already hard situations and gets another a big happening that is his father is dead. Hamlet makes a drama and shows to his uncle who is king now. He makes the drama and the story is his father is killed by uncle. His uncle sees this drama and leaves his seat. Who does like this drama tell indirectly that you are killed my father. Hamlet exposes his feeling like this drama, and in the end, he kills his uncle by recovering his father. Hamlets state of mind and mental condition are not already good by his current pressure that is he is a prince and gets another big shocking. I think it might be made him have that dream and made him crazy.

Hamlet: Act I

September 23, 2008

Hamlet is one of famous of Shakespeare’s four tragedies that are Macbeth Othello, King Lear, and Hamlet. I read Hamlet with another language instead of English and read English version now. The words are little different what I am used to use in the school or with friends; and this uses literary language. We do not use ‘hath,’ ‘’tis,’ ‘thyself,’ and ‘doth.’ Currently, we use ‘have’ instead of ‘hath’ and use ‘you.’ Moreover, we do not write ‘’tis’ and ‘’e’en’ anymore; and we write ‘it is’ instead of ‘’tis.’ For example, beginning of act I, Francisco say, ‘for this relief much thanks: ‘tis bitter cold and I am sick at heart,’ and when ghost enters, friend to Hamlet, Horatio, say ‘As thou art to thyself.’ The word ‘thou’ is also word we do not use now; this uses many old sayings that we do not use now. Therefore, it is little hard to understand because of many old words if I do not know Hamlet’s story, but since this is one of very famous literature, most people know this story, so we can guess or presume what the characters want to say. People who grow up in America and live long time in America may know these words commonly, but I am not born in America and also do not live in America long, and I may not know these words. As we know, Hamlet is main character that is in grievous situation. In the part I, he meet his dead father’s sprit. His dead father’s sprit comes to see Hamlet and tell him how his father died. Ghost also asks to him to revenge his murdered father. End of Act I, there are three people that are Hamlet, Marcllus, and Horatio assure that they will not say anything about they have seen and go together and will develop this story.

Life In The Iron Mill

September 16, 2008

As we see the subject of this book, Life in the Iron Mills is about life about factory workers and shows their life. Around the author wrote this book, America was advanced industrialization and capitalism spreads out, but there had a problem after developing; that is rank discord. The capitalist and worker were different position and their gaps were getting wider and rank the discord to be deepened. She described workers are ‘slow-wave’ when they were going to go factory with unhappy and tired face. I can guess this situation how inferior their working condition, and their life is cruel as working too much with forcing; therefore, they do not satisfy and happy. This book has a narrator, and I think the narrator is a woman and also observes outside world through window; in the beginning of this book, outside world is presented by her eyes; it was gloomy. I do not think outside world is not good living conditions for people as she depict outside world like ‘smoke everywhere’; America is getting to be advanced industrialization, and it makes her suffocating. Indeed, I feel that a narrator does not have freedom because she look outside through window and does not have any activity in outside. Now, I have a question. Does she have a freedom because the narrator is a woman?
Every worker is not happy. Even one of them is not satisfy their life and work. I do not think that they did not have a choice to do other things because this is one of reason they had limited education. I believe that narrator liken this situation to night because in the end of this book she say that “God has set the promise of the Dawn.” They will get the dawn that is peaceful and happy contrast now; presently, their life is darkness, hopeless, and tired. However, it will be better when they get the dawn, morning that is sunny day. I think the narrator seems to have God faith.
